Challenge
One of the largest supermarket chains in Great Britain established a target to reduce the use of plastic in its stores, thereby reducing the environmental impact while meeting consumer demand for generating less waste.
Another major challenge for the company was talking to the 1500 suppliers, explaining to them what the new plastic use guidelines in the supermarket chain were and then having all the information consolidated and detailed to make purchases according to what had been defined, according to this new challenge.
Solution
To enable working with all of its suppliers, informing them that packaging was crucial in deciding what would or would not be sold in stores, the British multinational company used Neogrid's Sourcing solution for supplier quotes and contract management, providing the chain more productivity and agility to achieve the expected results.
Sourcing connects the retailer to suppliers, but does not just show simple quotes, it goes further and allows the retailer to describe what they really want and need for a company to be their supplier. The buyer defines the parameters and can compare all the information in an organized way inside the system, which can be integrated into the company's ERP.

Results
In 2020, the supermarket chain stopped using plastic bags and replaced them with paper bags, as well as removed plastic trays for meals, secondary caps for products such as creams and yogurts, forks and straws for snack boxes and drinks, and 200 million packages used to pack clothes and greeting cards with their own brand.
In addition to changing the packaging of its own brand, the chain also started to only sell products from other brands that met the same guidelines related to plastic use based on 4Rs: remove where possible, reduce where it cannot be removed, reuse more, and recycle what's left.
With the Sourcing solution, the British multinational retailer took just one year to achieve the milestone of one billion less plastic bags in the environment, thus contributing to sustainability in the world, maintaining an excellent relationship with its suppliers and being able to select new ones with the best quotes and in accordance with its guidelines.
